On Saturday, we attended an Exclusive Italian Lunch at Pepenero on Stanley Street. PepeNero, meaning black pepper in Italian, refers back to the most popular and commonly used spice in the world. It finds its way into nearly everything from Indian curries to Italian cuisines. PepeNero is a contemporary fine restaurant, they offer you a fresh take of an old country with their multi- regional fare. Their philosophy is straightforward: to use the best ingredients as simply as possible and to serve you with a flourish to tantalise your taste buds.
The lunch was organized by Manu because of the Savour event in Singapore. She invited 3 chefs from Piemonte to cook some homemade food for us. Once we arrived at the restaurant, it felt like I was in Italy already.
Look at the scene behind Louise & Pikling
The guests were all ITALIANS! We were the only Chinese and there was only one more Chinese guy who spoke fluent Italian. It really felt like we were intruding into an intimate Italian family gathering. Hahaha! Anyway while everyone was busy introducing themselves and shaking hands and kissing on the cheek, I took a tour around the cosy little restaurant. After what seemed like eternity we were finally seated down for the fabulous meal.
Louise very very happy while Pikling is sulking
Waiting for food to be serve
The whole place gets noiser and noiser after everyone had some drinks
First was the Frittata roll with Ham and Tuna Cream – The green color portion is the spinach which they did so fantastically that the only thing that was veggie about it was the color. The next layer is egg followed by another layer of ham and tuna. Manu says if you were to eat this dish in Italy, the eggs, flour and veggies would all have been taken from the farm would make the dish taste even better! I seriously couldn’t imagine how that was possible as what we had was already so good!
2 very good student. Louise is trying to figure out what is on her plate while the 2 lady chefs are explaning and Pikling is looking at the 2 ladies attentively.
Wine pairing, losing count on how many did we had.
II Bosseto – Dolcetto d’Alba 2009: One of the best white I ever had
II Bosseto – Nascetta 2011: Not too bad
II Bosseto – Moscato d’Asti: I love this the best! Sparkly and sweet and light at the same time.
And an additional Moscato on the house. But I didn’t like this because of the 13.5% alcohol content.
The very happy gal after Wine. If you need her legal advice. U can pay her in Wine.
Next was the Piedmontese Lasagna – The pasta sheets were freshly made and so smooth till the texture was somewhat similar our Chinese wonton skin.

Because Karen and Pikling do not take beef, the restaurant prepared squid ink pasta for them instead and I enjoyed it too! The pasta was also freshly made and the seafood was so succulent that you could taste the sweetness in them. We agreed it was motor bueno (means very good in Italian). Actually I would just describe it as MAMAMIA!
Sulking again because her glass is empty. MORE WINE please!
Louise talking to the new friend.
Meat Rolls were next – I cannot really comment on this dish because I am not a fan of meat rolls. BUT Miss Louise Long cleared the entire plate so I think she really liked it.

Pork cutlet for Karen & Pikling
Me, Manu & Karen. Thanks Pikling for using the wine bottle to block away some of my chubby arms.
Simply divine
Dessert up next – Hazelnut Cake with Zabaione – The 2 lady chef is so used to planting whatever they used to cook, so they brought a bagful of their home grown hazelnut all the way to Singapore just to bake this cake! With all the love and sincerity in the cake, needless for me to say, it was awesome!
Very very good student. He is explaning the history of his family vineyard to Pikling. "I am the third generation in the family who stays at the vineyard but because my father had sent me to a wine university, I therefore became the first generation to brew wine"
Still listening.
The group photo. Me with the 2 chef follow by Manu then Karen & Pikling. Louise is still busy talking to her new friend.
That’s all for now! CIAO!! CIAO!!
