Karen's Birthday Dinner @ Majestic Restaurant

We celebrate each and everyone’s birthdays every year. Birthday celebrations make a good reason to meet up and update each other. So on 10 July 2013, we met up to celebrate Karen’s birthday at Majestic. We used to meet weekly, if not fortnightly for dinners. But somehow all of us just got busier and now I can’t recall the last time we had dinner together. And I mean all 6. On Wednesday night, Mako could not make it as well because of a business trip. Nonetheless the 5 of us still went ahead with the dinner. Majestic Restaurant was recommended by my editor in chief’s husband, Philippe.

So finally here I am. I suspect Philippe really likes this restaurant else he would not have recommended me time and time again to come and try it. So let me review the items that we had on for Karen’s birthday dinner. We opted for the $88 set (per pax).

First dish: The appetizer (Peking duck skin with rockets, Pan fried foie gras, Salted egg prawn with mango) 2.5/5 I did not really like this dish as I feel that peking duck skin should always be wrapped with the dough skin and some cucumber slice, and most importantly the sweet sauce and should not be eaten with some veggie. I also did not like the pan fried foie gras as the gamy taste was so strong and lingered in my mouth for a long time. Last on the appetizer was the salted egg prawn with mango which tasted the same as those at most other Chinese restaurants. Therefore it didn’t impress me either.

Second dish: Sharks Fin 4/5 I really, really liked the crabmeat sharks fin soup because the soup was not the normal starchy kind but the boiled kind! The whole mini pot was filled with fresh crunchy beansprouts (without the head and the tail) and chunks of crabmeat. I always hate it when the chef leaves bits and pieces of crab shell on the meat and how they always get stuck in between my teeth. But this, is mama mia.. you just want another bowl.

Third dish: Abalone & Tofu with broccoli 4/5 What can possibly go wrong when you cook abalone in the canto style with lots of stock and oyster sauce.

Fourth dish: Steam Fish with Vermicelli 3.5/5 The fish was pretty fresh and the soya sauce used was very fragrant as well. But with the huge amount of fried garlic on top, I didn’t finish this dish.

Fifth dish: Fish paste noodle with Wagyu beef fillet 4/5 The noodle was simply yummy. It blended in so well with the sesame dressing used. The wagyu beef fillet was just so tender and juicy. But by this time, I was so full and couldn’t stomach it anymore. I had to leave some room for the dessert.

Sixth dish: Dessert of your choice We each chose a dessert which we wanted from the options in the menu. Being a kiasu Singaporean, I went for the Majestic special - crispy fried durian ice cream. Needless to say, it was really yummy, and the portion was so generous, we just had to share the calories load. Pik Ling opted for some sorbert which obviously didn’t taste like any form of sorbert but somewhat like a cheese ice cream. Adeline and Louise chose the durian puree with gula Melaka and Karen chose the brewed Tianjin Pear. The verdict of the dessert: Karen was the only one who finished hers. So I’ve concluded that if I ever returned I will go for the Tianjin pear.

To sum up my whole experience, the $88 which we paid for per person was totally absolutely worth it. The quality and the portion and the ambience wouldn’t leave you feeling short changed. As the restaurant was short of staff, we had to refill our own wine and tea which wasn’t a big issue as once the staff spotted us doing it, they immediately rushed over and apologized and offered to help. Majestic Restaurant is a place I would not mind re-visiting if any of my friends request for it. But if you ask whether I would return to Majestic Restaurant on my own, the answer would be No. This blog should be more about Karen’s birthday but it turned out to be a mega food review. Haha..

Note to Philippe: All the above said is my personal opinion. =)

Ambience 4/5 (a little bit too noisy)
Taste 4/5
Value for money 5/5
Service 3.5/5

By the way, there is valet service on site.

Ashley's Travelogue - HongKong Again 2013

2 July 2013

Hong Kong has always been one of my favourite countries.  So much so that I do not mind visiting her twice or thrice a year.  After my last HK posting in May, here I was departing for HK yet and again! This time I travelled with Louise and Pikling to connect with Maggie who was joining us from Guangzhou. But it seemed like we formed a mini-Singapore contingent with 5 of Louise's friends and also Maggie's sister, May who happened to be there during at the same time! If the saying "3 women is a market" is true, then apparently we made up 3  1/3 markets.  haha! Anyway I'll let the photos do the talking...

Anning Chia's 29th Birthday

10 June 2013

This year my girlfriends and I are taking turns to celebrate our last Twenty birthday because it will be the Big Thirty for us next year. But honestly to me, age is just a number. Growing older means we become wiser, richer, prettier and more forgiving. So having said that, I can't wait for my last Twenty birthday to arrive!!

Now back to Anning's birthday, she chose Brussel Sprout at Sentosa's Quayside Isle because of the nice landscape and tranquility.  But since it's been so humid recently we had to keep asking for cold water with lots of ice.

Joy and Anning.
(Joy is Anning and Angie's ex-colleague who later became a frequent guest for our group activities).

Shujuan & her classic timeless clutch

 Miu Miu & Chanel

I love the yellow on this ASOS dress and I purposely paired it with
a neon pink ZARA clutch to bring out the 2 colors.
The dress can be worn without a belt but by I think putting on a belt accentuates the waistline.

Maggie in all white looking all angelic. hahaa

Decided to sit on the wooden floor to pose with the yacht.

A upclose edited photos. I paired the look with a pair of pink mary janes from Stuart Weitzman.
The light pink/nude heels lengthen the legs but doesn't steal any limelight
from the dress and the clutch bag.

A pretty dress isn't enough to standalone on its on.  Accessories play a huge part in the whole look. For this occasion, the newly acquired Hermes CDC and a pair of purple Swarovski crystal dangling earrings (not clear from the photo) complete the look.

Discussing what to eat. Anning looks kind of retro in this photo.

An angry woman is a hungry woman, so let's start eating.

Hazel & Maggie & Codfish

Clams in white wine sauce with free flow of fries

Asparagus wrap with bacon

When the waiter served this dish, I was like : who on earth ordered 3 sticks of asparagus with a lump of mashed potato! I could have made that for you!

The weather was so humid that we had to take turns to stand infront of this cooler.

Finally the other 3 arrived but as it was getting dark, the photos did not come out very clear.

Can you see that Shujuan's hair has collapsed from the humid weather? Hahaha
